| Are there any issues with virus detectors that I should be aware of? | ||||||||||
Running a virus detector on a computer is an important preventative maintenance step. However, you should be aware that they can cause various unexpected results when used in conjunction with Dataworxs products. 1) When running on an Audioworxs server, some virus detectors have been known to cause problems for Job Server. 2) When running on a computer using Personal Companion or AudioWav Player some virus detectors have been known to prevent the e-mail feature of these applications from working. What should you do? 1) If you suspect that a virus detector is causing problems try disabling it for a short period of time and see if the problem(s) go away. On an Audioworxs server the three most common sources of infections (e-mailing, web browsing, and Internet file downloading) should not be done anyway and therefore it should be safe to have a virus detector temporarily disabled. 2) Although Dataworxs does not recommend any specific virus detector, we have found from experience that Network Associates VirusScan Enterprise and AVG Anti-Virus run successfully in tandem with Audioworxs servers. 3) Configure the virus detector so that it does not scan wave (.wav) and dss audio files and tell it not to scan the folder where the Audioworxs database files are located. If applicable, also exclude any folder where log files are being written. 4) If the virus detector is interfering with the ability of Personal Companion or AudioWav Player to send e-mails try disabling the detector's automatic e-mail scanning feature. |
