Some models of Olympus recorders (DS-2 and DS-4000, for example) require an Olympus service called DM1Service to be running and functioning properly in order for Personal Companion to be notified when the recorder has been connected to the computer.

On some computers DM1Service may occasionally stop functioning properly and Personal Companion is not notified when the recorder is connected. To accommodate this situation Personal Companion can also be configured to recognize that the recorder has been connected by using the Source (Removable) feature.

If you notice that Personal Companion occasionally stops responding when you connect an Olympus digital recorder use the following configuration instead.

1) In Windows Services (Administrative Tools --> Services) set DM1Service to manual and leave it off.

2) In Personal Companion's setup dialog set the "Source (Removable)" to the drive letter that represents the digital recorder when it is connected to the computer. Ensure that it has a permanent mapping (i.e. the same drive letter is assigned by Windows each time the recorder is connected). See the related question "Assigning a permanent drive letter mapping to a removable drive" for more details.

3) Turn ON "Search all subdirectories"

4) Set "Search source every" to 30 seconds (or try experimenting with smaller values).

5) Set "File aging" to 5 seconds

Note: In Windows XP, audio files are competely deleted from the recorder as soon as Personal Companion indicates "Download Complete" and it is generally okay to disconnect the recorder immediately. However, When using Windows 2000, there is a delay of up to 20 seconds from the time Personal Companion indicates "Download Complete" until the audio files are completely deleted from the recorder. This delay is caused by the Windows operating system and not Personal Companion.
