The answer to this question is at least partially based on expected usage. A small system that will be used by only a few people can successfully be installed on a single computer. As the number of simultaneous users and the number of on-line job records increases it will become necessary to add a second computer. The second computer may be dedicated to the database engine while the first computer runs the Audioworxs servers. A third computer may be necessary if a telephone interface card is to be added to provide telephone access to dictation and/or transcription services. A third computer can provide dedicated telephone access without impacting the performance of the database or Audioworxs servers. Further, the Audioworxs servers themselves may require separate computers on which to run if the load becomes heavy enough to impact performance. The Job Server and File Server can each run on separate computers if required.

Factors to consider are:

  • Available network bandwidth.
  • Type of database.
  • Dedicated database or shared?
  • Internet connection speed.
  • Amount of memory (RAM) in the computers.
  • CPU speed.
  • Hard drive type and speed.
  • Number of simultaneous clients.
  • Growth expectations.
  • Backup and archival plans.
  • What other tasks the computer(s) may be performing.
